What to expect...
It's a bit like a choir as we all sing together in "parts" to create harmony. But there are no auditions, no sheet music, no accompaniment, and no learning at home!
All voices and levels of singing ability are welcome - this is more about the pleasure of singing than creating the perfect sound. When you're participating, it just feels and sounds wonderful. If you think you're tone deaf, you probably aren't anyway. It doesn't matter if you are a bit out of tune - everyone is some times - we work on it - and in a group you will feel supported and encouraged.
Songs are taught "by ear" which means I sing you the song, broken down into short sections, you listen and repeat. We do this this until everyone is confident with the melody and the words. The song quickly builds and comes together in beautiful harmony. Most of the songs we choose are short and repetitive, with only a few words. Often, the songs are especially written for natural voice groups like this, which means they are easy to learn, easy to sing, often in 3 or 4 part harmony or just sung as a "round". Regardless of the ability within the group, it nearly always sounds wonderful and people find it very enjoyable and rewarding!
Everyone has their favourite songs that they like to sing, so I often re-teach songs we already know, but I typically try to introduce one new song per week. We start with some gentle physical and vocal warmups and breathing exercises. Then we sit on chairs in a circle while we learn a song, and finally stand to sing it, several times through until we really get the feel for it.
Non-Performing
Our sessions are for pleasure, and not about working towards a performance. But there are always opportunities for informal performance in the community if the group would like to perform in the future.
Practical stuff
The warm ups are personal to you and may be adapted to your needs and ability. It is perfectly fine to stay sitting throughout the session if you have any difficulty standing. The venue is a Yoga studio with a beautiful polished wooden floor, and so requires us to remove our shoes.
Sessions are led by NVPN member Sue Lay, tel: 07974 090003
Please contact Sue before you turn up, just to check that the session is actually running. We generally meet every Wednesday evening except for school holidays, but the occasional change may happen.
